The stunning trophy |
Posted 6th April, 2006
Dear Mr. Robinson,
I am writing to you on behalf of the popular rugby website The East Terrace, which you can visit at www.theeastterrace.com.
We are pleased to announce that your team, England, won our inaugural digital Six Nations competition and, as a result, we are delighted to forward you on this rather spiffing trophy.
In case you are unaware of the tournament, allow me to take this opportunity to explain. Our website, dedicated as it is to the cause and promotion of rugby football, attempted to simulate the outcome of the 2006 RBS Six Nations by using modern computer technology. We used groundbreaking computing systems - such as Amstrad 464s, Nintendos and Playstations - to try and forecast the results of the 2006 matches. You can visit the results section and analysis statistics at this address:

We are delighted to tell you that England won the tournament after a dramatic victory over Ireland in the final round of matches. In fact, your only defeat came in a shock result against Italy/Russia. Russia was picked to represent Italy as the Amstrad 464 game didn’t have an Italian option. Sorry.
Please find enclosed the match results and final table.
Sorry for the delay in getting this trophy to you, but the first time we went to purchase it the engraver was on a tea break and the nice lady behind the counter was on the phone. Which made things hard as we have very little spare time to sort these sort of things out.
Whilst you were not directly involved in this digital event, we would be honoured if you would accept our trophy as, being a passionate Englishman, I am sure you are delighted to see an English rugby team win any event (even if it is digital). As current head coach of the English national side, The East Terrace feels you would be the most obvious person to receive our award on behalf of all our English readers who were rooting for the digital team.
We don’t quite have the budget of the Six Nations committee, but we hope you find our trophy pleasing and pleasant to the eye. It may look a bit like something given to nine-year olds playing mini-rugby, but it was the best we could afford. We got it engraved and everything, though! Besides, with the Twickenham trophy room being a bit bare since 2003, I am sure it will be nice to have a reason to unlock the trophy cabinet again (other than for taking things out). However, as with all trophies for major events, we would be grateful if you were able to return the trophy before our championship next year.
Thanks for your time and we would be most appreciative of any comments we could pass on to our loyal readers who were thrilled by our dramatic digital tournament. Furthermore, if you want to host any kind of press conference or arrange any kind of victory parade or party, we would be most delighted to help out in anyway that we can.
Congratulations once again on the digital success.
We can be contacted at webmaster@theeastterrace.com or at (address supplied), with any comments or feedback you wish to make.
Wishing you the very best for the rest of the season.
Yours sincerely,
Rugby Football Correspondent
