The East Terrace finally back in the black
Rugby World Cup '95
Format: Sega Megadrive
Publisher: EA SPORTS
This time we used Rugby World Cup ‘95 for the Sega Megadrive to give us a glimpse into the future. After losing everything we wagered for the first two rounds of games, we needed to win back some funds. So how did we do?
France v Italy
Our experiment told us that France would win this game by 7-0. To be honest, we didn’t believe it either. We did, however, put a couple of euros on the French number eight getting the first try in this fixture as our simulation predicted. With odds of 20/1, we were well chuffed when Thomas Lievremont crossed the whitewash first. The East Terrace was back in the black. How could you ever doubt us?
Result: We got the winner and the first try! We got €42 for that!
Scotland v England
Rugby World Cup ’95 failed to produce a single try when we ran this game. It predicted a 3-0 win to England, with Scotland dropping the ball over the line in the last second of the game.
Result: If only we had listened to our Megadrive a bit better here. With the real Calcutta match finishing tryless we could have made a mint. Especially as it was the first game in the championship for three years to finish with no try. The East Terrace actually ignored the game’s prediction here and we bet €2 on Scotland to win by 6-9 points; we imagined that the dropped ball in our computer simulation was actually a try. Although Scotland’s non try would have made the margin either two or five points to Scotland, the odds for that margin were low. So we went for 6-9 points and we got that at 14/1. Joy.
Ireland v Wales
Our computer said Wales to win 7-0 with the try coming from the left winger.
Result: You guessed it, we lost all our bets on this one. Putting us another €4 down.
Conclusions for Round Three
Finally, we actually made a profit. We came out of this round with winnings of €68. We did lose €4 on the Irish game though, meaning we made €64 in total. Having lost a total of €20 over the opening two rounds, we are now €44 up overall. How could you ever doubt our scientific methods?
Come back for the next round when we use the classic Jonah Lomu Rugby to make us rich.
