How did we do in Round Two with our Amstrad predictions? |
Six Nations Round Two

Last week The East Terrace again bravely told the rugby world exactly how the weekend’s action in the Six Nations would pan out (Click here to read about our predictions page for week two).
This time we used International Rugby Simulator for the Amstrad 464 to give us a glimpse into the future. After losing everything we wagered for the first round of games, we needed to win back some funds. So how did we do?
France v Ireland
Our trusty Amstrad 464 told us this would finish 7-5 to France. We got the winner right but were out slightly in the scoring department as France actually won 43-31. However, we claim some kind of moral victory here as our simulation told us Ireland would rally at the death. Indeed, almost everyone who saw the clash in Paris agrees that with another ten minutes played Ireland would have won. Therefore, it is highly amusing that when we simulated the game the computer tried to play a third half before the computer over-ruled it by crashing! If only we had picked up on the omens.
Result: As International Simulator doesn’t have player names or numbers, we could only bet that the first score would come from a forward, rather than a specific player. We bet on two of the French back row to breach the try line first, with a confident €2 on each. We lost.
Russia (Italy) v France
To be honest, we never really believed Russia (or indeed Italy) would win this one 10-7, as our program suggested, but we still backed them to win by 1-5pts for the sake of our journalistic integrity. We had good odds of 20/1 for Italy to win by one to five points and we were only twenty odd minutes from getting it right as Italy had a 9-7 lead not long after the break. (Yup, we are clutching at straws here, folks).
Result: We lost on the result and on betting on the first try coming from an Italian forward. Thanks again Amstrad 464, another €3 gone.
West Germany (Wales) v Scotland
Maybe it isn’t worth trying to predict any games that Steve Walsh referees, but we tried. But next time we should see if they have an International Referee Simulator to predict such matches. Either way, the sending off of Murray in the real game was unforeseen and once that happened this fixture was never going to follow our computer prediction.
Result: You guessed it, we lost all our bets. Another €3 gone.
Overall, the computer was even worse than it was in round one of the tournament. The East Terrace, therefore, concludes that using eighteen year-old computer software designed for the Amstrad 464 may not be the best tool to use when placing hard currency on the outcome of rugby games. Are you listening professional rugby analysts? So we lost €10 this week, bringing our total losses to €20.
But guess what? Next time we have an even better program to use and we just know that this one is going to do the business for us. Get those wallets ready for big winnings!
